Two weeks until Safer Internet Day 2023!
Safer Internet Day (SID) is almost here – on Tuesday, 7 February 2023, we will be millions around the globe, joining forces “Together for a better internet”. This edition is extra special, as it celebrates the 20th anniversary of this international day. Are you ready? How are you going to get involved in celebrating with us?
Safer Internet Day – organised by the Insafe/INHOPE network of European Safer Internet Centres (SICs) with the support of the European Commission* – is a global, community-led observance which provides a space for all stakeholders to reflect on how together we can promote a responsible, respectful, critical and creative use of digital technologies with the ultimate goal of fostering a better internet for all. Over the past twenty years, Safer Internet Day has grown in scope and is now celebrated by children, young people, parents and carers, teachers, educators and social workers, industry, decision makers and politicians from over 180 countries and territories.
On Safer Internet Day 2023 – on Tuesday, 7 February – we will be millions across the globe, joining forces “Together for a better internet”. This edition is particularly special as it marks the 20th anniversary of the celebrations, and it will be as vibrant and engaging as ever, thanks to the resourcefulness and creativity of the wide network of SID supporters, allowing us all to reflect on how we protect, empower and respect all children and young people when they go online.
For this edition of Safer Internet Day, we will additionally be reflecting on the new European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+) adopted in May 2022, which aims to ensure the digital participation, empowerment and protection of young users, and lays the foundations and vision of the internet we want to shape for the future. With the recently adopted Digital Services Act package and the Declaration on European Digital Rights and Principles, we are keen to see how safer, better and empowering online experiences for everyone will develop over the next twenty years.
In the meantime, make sure to:
- visit www.saferinternetday.org to get an idea of how our SID committees and supporters are celebrating Safer Internet Day 2023, and to find a variety of resources and inspiration for your own plans.
- keep an eye on the official Safer Internet Day Twitter and Facebook pages and follow the activities on social media with the hashtags #SaferInternetDay and #SID2023. We will also celebrate SID2023 on the Better Internet for Kids’ LinkedIn account.
* Safer Internet Day would not be possible without the support of the European Commission. Currently the funding is provided by the Connecting Europe Facility programme (CEF). Find out more about the EC’s “European Strategy for a Better Internet for Kids” on the European Commission’s website.
